Tsuchizaki Shinmeisha Shrine Annual Celebration and Float Festival

■ UNESCO intangible cultural heritage
■ National significant intangible folk cultural asset

The annual festival of Tsuchizaki Shinmeisha Shrine in the port city of Tsuchizaki is believed to have begun in its current form in the 1700s. With Minato-bayashi music resonating in the streets, floats decorated with doll warriors representing each neighborhood weave down the street. The festival invigorates the city for two days, with the excitement peaking as the floats return to their respective bases. It was designated a significant intangible folk cultural asset by the national government in 1997, and it was registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2016.
